The Yoga

Every morning we start the day with a yoga session followed by a surf. So why the combination surf & yoga?

Surf & Yoga is a magic combination in so many ways. To surf is to play; we get to have fun and move our body at the same time. And, yoga is a great way to prepare for the surf, and to feel grounded and in tune with our bodies.

The combination of surf and yoga is getting more and more popular in the surf and yoga world. We are really stoked to present a retreat that focus on both. Gerry Lopez, one of the most recognized and influential surfers in history, has spent more than four decades studying yoga. Talking about the combination of surf and yoga, he said “I’ve been surfing for 55 years and I’m still learning. But I do know that if you can find your focus and clear your mind, you’ll progress more.”

The learning curve is so steep in surfing that if you’re not fully tuned in to your surroundings and completely focused on what’s happening around you in the lineup, you’re going to fail.

Learning how to breathe properly is really important. It’ll calm you down when you’re stressed, relax your body, and tighten your focus. These are all things you want to be doing when you’re surfing. Breathing is the first thing we do in this life. When done properly, breathing can really contribute positively to your overall health. – Gerry Lopez

The benefits that yoga can have on surfing are pretty far-reaching. Whether it’s through strength, flexibility, or simply just breathing better—all these things are pretty damn important in surfing, right?

Yoga Retreat Sri Lanka

At the retreat we have yoga classes every day. Yoga is a big part of the retreat for those who are interested. If you don’t feel that yoga is your thing, or you want to skip a class, that’s totally fine as well.

Our retreat is naturally focused on surfing because that is where we initially found ourselves and started to chase our dreams. We believe yoga is a very important complement to surfing. Imagine waking up to the sound of chanting monks, doing yoga in the courtyard as it’s getting light, and catching your first waves in a magical Sri Lankan sunrise. It’s just such a great combination.
