Ahangama is a small coastal town on Sri Lanka's south coast, somewhere between a fishing village, surf town and tropical hideaway.

The railway runs between palm trees and the ocean. Tuk-tuks buzz along the coast road. Stilt fishermen still stand above the water, little roadside kades serve coconuts and rice & curry, and there is almost always a wave breaking somewhere nearby.

Over the years, Ahangama has grown into one of the south coast's most exciting little communities, with independent cafés, restaurants, bars, surf shops and creative spaces opening alongside everyday Sri Lankan village life.

For surfers, it's particularly hard to beat. Kabalana, Ahangama, Midigama and Weligama put an incredible variety of waves within a relatively short stretch of coastline.

One of the biggest reasons to surf in Ahangama is variety.

Within a short tuk-tuk ride you'll find mellow beach breaks, longboard-friendly waves, faster reef breaks and more challenging waves for experienced surfers.

The south coast of Sri Lanka is famous for its consistency. With so many different breaks along a relatively small stretch of coastline, there is usually somewhere to surf every day.

Different spots work best in different conditions, so rather than being tied to one particular wave, you can move along the coast and find the surf that suits the day.

And while November to April brings the most reliable combination of swell, wind and weather, the waves don't simply switch off outside the main Sri Lanka surf season. There is surf on the south coast throughout the year, making Ahangama one of those places where there's almost always somewhere to paddle out.

Beginners can head towards more forgiving beach breaks, while intermediate and advanced surfers can explore the reefs and point breaks around Ahangama, Midigama and Kabalana.

The main surf season in Ahangama and southern Sri Lanka generally runs from November to April, bringing the most reliable combination of swell, favourable winds and tropical weather.

This is also when Ahangama is at its liveliest, with restaurants, cafés, bars, surf shops and beach spots all in full swing.

If you're looking for the classic Sri Lanka surf trip — warm water, early morning sessions, tropical weather and plenty happening after the surf — this is the heart of the season.

From May to October, Sri Lanka's south coast becomes quieter, greener and more tropical.

There is no complete off-season for surfing in Ahangama. Waves continue throughout the year, although wind and weather become more variable during the green season.

With so many different surf breaks along the coast, there are still plenty of opportunities to get in the water.

If you're wondering what to do in Ahangama, you don't need a particularly complicated itinerary.

Wake up early. Surf before breakfast. Grab a coffee. Spend the hot part of the day by the pool or at one of the beaches around Ahangama. Head back into the ocean in the afternoon. Find somewhere for sunset, dinner and a drink.

You can take a yoga class, explore the coastline by tuk-tuk, visit neighbouring Kabalana, Midigama or Weligama, head inland through rice fields and villages or spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

Some of the best days in Ahangama are the ones where very little was planned.

Looking for the best restaurants in Ahangama? The food scene has become almost as much a part of the town as surfing.

You'll find everything from Sri Lankan rice & curry and roadside hoppers to speciality coffee, Indian food, Chinese dumplings, Middle Eastern food, pizza, seafood and cocktails.

There are plenty of great places to eat in Ahangama, but these are our 11 favourite restaurants and cafés in Ahangama — the places we'd recommend to friends staying with us.

Don't spend your whole Sri Lanka trip eating in cafés.

Some of the best Sri Lankan food in Ahangama doesn't come with an Instagram page or carefully designed menu.

Look for busy little local restaurants around lunchtime. Order rice & curry, choose from whatever curries were cooked that morning and eat with your hands if you're feeling confident.

Try egg hoppers for breakfast, kottu for a late dinner, short eats from a bakery and a fresh king coconut from the side of the road.

Ahangama's newer restaurant scene is great, but this is still Sri Lanka — and you should eat like it at least a few times while you're here.

Ahangama nightlife isn't about huge clubs or going out every night — and that's part of the appeal.

Most nights start around sunset and the crowd moves depending on what's happening that evening. Some nights mean dinner and an early bed before dawn patrol. Others go considerably later.

The south coast doesn't really follow a fixed nightlife calendar.

Parties, DJs, live music, karaoke and events move between venues throughout the season, so the best place to go out in Ahangama on a Wednesday might be completely different from the best place on a Saturday.

Ahangama sits on a beautiful stretch of the southern Sri Lankan coastline, surrounded by surf breaks, reef-fringed beaches and small sandy bays.

Some stretches are exposed surf beaches while others have calmer pockets for swimming depending on conditions.

Kabalana Beach is one of the area's best-known beaches and surf spots, while the coastline towards Midigama and Weligama opens up even more options for surfing and swimming.

Ocean conditions can change quickly, so always check conditions locally before swimming somewhere unfamiliar.

Ahangama has developed a growing surf and creative scene.

You'll find independent surf shops in Ahangama, locally made clothing, ceramics, art, jewellery and small brands scattered along the coast.

If you're staying at Sunshine Stories, it's an easy stop before or after a surf — and usually an excuse for a coffee or something cold while you're there.

You don't have to surf all day.

Visit a tea estate, wander through a local market, explore the back roads through rice fields and villages, take a tuk-tuk along the coast or simply spend an afternoon doing very little.

Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an easy day or afternoon trip from Ahangama. Wander through the old streets, shops and cafés and stay for sunset over the fort walls.

Mirissa lies further east along the coast, while Weligama, Midigama and Kabalana are all part of the stretch of southern Sri Lanka we move through almost every day.

Travel a few kilometres inland from Ahangama and the landscape changes completely — surfboards and beaches disappear into rice fields, temples, jungle and small villages.

Ahangama is located on Sri Lanka's south coast, between Galle and Matara and close to Weligama, Midigama and Kabalana.

For short trips around Ahangama, tuk-tuks are the easiest way to move between beaches, surf spots, cafés and restaurants.

Ahangama Railway Station sits directly in town, and the coastal railway connects Ahangama with Weligama, Galle, Colombo and destinations further along the coast.

Scooters are widely available, although Sri Lankan roads can be busy and unfamiliar. Make sure you have the appropriate licence and insurance if you choose to drive yourself.

For airport transfers and longer journeys around Sri Lanka, a car or van with a driver is usually the easiest option.
