Almsgiving in Weligama

For those of you not familiar with the term ‘almsgiving’ it involves giving to others as an act of integrity and purity

On Saturday 8th of July, the Sunshinestories family celebrated ‘almsgiving’ in Weligama. An evening of rich Sri Lankan culture, celebrations and delicious traditional home cooked food. For those of you not familiar with the term ‘almsgiving’ it involves giving to others as an act of integrity and purity. Almsgiving is one of the most common practices among Buddhists. The celebrations are not deemed an act of charity as such, more a spiritual bond between the Sri Lankan people.

Some shots behind the scenes of the heros in action ….

On this particular day, in Weligama over 10,000 food servings were served to the Sri Lankan community including all women, men and children celebrating the “Poya” meaning full moon. Thousands of people queue for their special free meal. Given a plate and a dessert token (we sponsored some of the delicious yogurts this evening) we were all served a home cooked meal which was prepared traditionally. Kudos to the great team that made it all happen! Some shots behind the scenes of the heros in action ….

So together, we too, ate the traditional meal with our right hands and chatted away fully immersing ourselves in the beautiful culture all around us

When it comes to Sri Lankan food, the majority of people eat rice with their right hand, but other dishes with spoons. So together, we too, ate the traditional meal with our right hands and chatted away fully immersing ourselves in the beautiful culture all around us. Thanks Anna, front desk manager at Ceylon Sliders, for sharing your healthy tip – explaining physically touching your food helps prepare your body for the meal, and aids digestion and limits your intake among other benefits … you learn something new every day!

Being one of many sponsors in the Almsgiving festival in Weligama this evening, it was a humble gesture to show our gratitude and appreciation in return for all this country’s wonderful hospitality it has shown us over the years.

It is these Sri Lankan unique rituals that make this country so breathtakingly beautiful even surpassing the oceanic stunning views …. yes even the views!! The generosity of the people, their kindness and giving nature is clearly visible on these special celebratory days and evenings which made us all feel so welcome. We too were very proud to give back to the local community and take part in the act of giving.
